Choosing the Right Photographer

Choosing Your Wedding Photographer: It’s About More Than Just Taking Great Pictures!

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding. After all, when the flowers have wilted, the cake has been eaten and the last of your guests have headed home, your photographs will be one of the few things you’ll have left to remember your day.

But how do you choose the right photographer?

It’s tempting to look through a few websites, find someone whose photographs you like and compare prices. And whilst beautiful images are obviously important, there’s actually quite a bit more to consider.

Having photographed hundreds of weddings over the years, I’ve learnt that being a good wedding photographer involves much more than technical ability. Here’s what I think you should be looking for.

1. Personality and social interaction

This is a big one, and something couples sometimes overlook.

Your photographer will potentially spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost anyone else. They’ll be there during the preparations, the nervous excitement, the ceremony, the celebrations and everything in between.

So, ask yourself: Do you actually like them?

Do they make you feel comfortable? Can you have a laugh together? Do you feel relaxed in their company?

A good photographer should be approachable, friendly and able to fit naturally into your wedding day. They need to interact with your guests without making everyone feel as though they’re being constantly photographed.

Personally, I think a wedding photographer should feel more like a friendly face who’s part of the celebrations than someone who turns up, points a camera at people and disappears.

2. Creativity and an eye for a photograph

Technical knowledge is important, but creativity is what helps turn an ordinary photograph into something special.

Look for someone who has an eye for composition, light, interesting backgrounds and little details that others might overlook.

It’s not always about having the most expensive camera or the latest lens. Sometimes it’s about seeing something a little differently.

A creative photographer will look for opportunities throughout your day, whether that’s using beautiful natural light, finding an interesting perspective or capturing a fleeting moment that tells a story.

3. Can they direct you without making you feel awkward?

Let’s be honest, most couples aren’t professional models, and very few people feel completely comfortable having a camera pointed at them.

A good photographer understands this.

They should know when to offer a little direction, perhaps suggesting where to stand, how to position yourselves or where the light looks best.

But there’s a difference between gently guiding a couple and making them feel like they’re on a fashion shoot!

You want someone who can help you look your best whilst still allowing your personalities and relationship to shine through.

The best photographs often happen when couples forget the camera is even there.

4. Reliability and professionalism

This might not be the most exciting consideration, but it’s absolutely essential.

Your wedding day isn’t something you can simply do again next weekend if things go wrong.

You need someone who’s organised, punctual, prepared and takes their responsibilities seriously.

Consider asking:

  • Do they have a proper contract?

  • Are they insured?

  • Do they have backup camera equipment?

  • How do they protect and back up your photographs?

  • What happens if they’re unexpectedly unable to attend?

  • When can you expect to receive your finished photographs?

Experience counts for a lot here. Someone who’s photographed hundreds of weddings will have encountered all sorts of situations and, importantly, learnt how to deal with them.

5. Editing skills and consistency

What you see on a photographer’s website isn’t necessarily what comes straight out of their camera.

Editing is a significant part of modern wedding photography. Colour, contrast, exposure, skin tones and overall consistency all contribute to the finished image.

Look for a photographer whose editing style you genuinely love.

Do you prefer natural colours, a light and airy appearance, darker cinematic tones or something more traditional?

There’s no right or wrong answer, but make sure you like the finished look.

I’d also suggest looking beyond the hero images on their homepage. Ask to see a complete wedding gallery. This will give you a much better idea of how consistently they photograph and edit an entire wedding rather than just a handful of their very best images.

6. Can they spot those unscripted moments?

For me, this is one of the most important qualities of a wedding photographer.

Some of the most memorable photographs aren’t planned at all.

It’s the proud look on Dad’s face as he watches his daughter walk down the aisle. The laughter between friends during the speeches. A grandparent wiping away a tear. The children doing something completely unexpected. That little glance between the newlyweds when they think nobody is watching.

These moments can’t be organised, posed or recreated.

They require observation, anticipation and an ability to recognise what’s happening around you.

A good documentary-style photographer isn’t just photographing what’s in front of them. They’re constantly looking for those little stories unfolding throughout the day.

And quite often, those are the photographs you’ll treasure the most.

7. Is the work on their website actually theirs?

This is something I think couples should pay much more attention to.

We’re living in an age where AI-generated imagery, stock photography and heavily manipulated images are becoming increasingly common.

A beautiful photograph on a website doesn’t automatically mean the photographer actually took it.

I’m not suggesting every photographer is doing this, but it’s worth being a little discerning.

Look for consistency across their website and social media. Do you see the same photographic style, approach and quality throughout?

Ask to see a complete wedding gallery from a real wedding they’ve photographed.

Look for genuine photographs of real couples, real venues and real wedding days.

You could even ask whether the images displayed are entirely their own work.

AI can create some extraordinary imagery, but it can’t demonstrate how someone actually performs as a wedding photographer on your wedding day.

You aren’t booking an AI image generator. You’re booking a person to document one of the most important days of your life!

8. Experience matters

There’s no substitute for experience.

Wedding days rarely run exactly to schedule. The weather changes, timings slip, people disappear just when you need them, and occasionally things happen that nobody could possibly have predicted.

An experienced photographer knows how to adapt.

They understand wedding schedules, know how to work in difficult lighting conditions, can manage large groups and are comfortable dealing with unexpected situations.

More importantly, they can remain calm when things don’t go according to plan.

That confidence comes from doing the job, learning from experience and having photographed enough weddings to know that no two are ever quite the same.

9. Don’t make price your only consideration

Of course, budgets matter. Weddings are expensive, and it’s perfectly reasonable to compare prices.

But I’d encourage you to look at the overall value rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.

Consider what’s included, the photographer’s experience, the quality and consistency of their work, the time they’ll spend with you and the service you’ll receive.

Remember, your wedding photographs are something you’ll hopefully enjoy looking at for decades.

It’s worth investing in someone you trust to capture them properly.

10. Finally, trust your instincts!

After looking through portfolios, reading reviews and having conversations with potential photographers, there’s one final question worth asking yourself:

Can I imagine having this person around me, my family and my friends on my wedding day?

Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Do they understand what you’re looking for? Do you like their approach? Do you trust them?

If the answer is yes, you’re probably onto a winner.

A final thought…

At the end of the day, wedding photography isn’t simply about taking technically perfect photographs.

It’s about people, personalities, emotions, creativity and storytelling.

It’s about knowing when to step forward and offer a little direction, and when to step back and let things happen naturally.

It’s about noticing the moments that others miss and understanding that sometimes the most meaningful photograph is the one nobody knew was being taken.

So, by all means, look for beautiful photographs. But look for the person behind the camera too.

Because you’re not just choosing someone to take your wedding photographs. You’re choosing someone to be part of your wedding day and to tell the story of it.

Choose someone whose work you love, whose personality you enjoy and whose experience you trust.

And most importantly, choose someone who makes you feel that your wedding day is in safe hands.
